Motivated by the sour taste in my mouth from having to respond to ‘and what exactly is the genre of your work?’ and ‘but what does it mean?’ and ‘why do you keep talking about white supremacist structures?’

Other questions:

  • What do you see that others don’t see? What do you live that others don’t live?
  • What do you notice that is ugly and beautiful, truthful and blasphemous, high-art and low-brow in confusing and exciting ways?
  • How can you write from your life to mine?
  • What is your history? What world do you come from that I have not seen, how does that world shape my world in ways I may not know?
  • You know that hill you thought you would die on, how have you moved from that hill?

We welcome a spectrum of expressions:

  • Writings (ie. non-academic essays, personal essays, short stories up to 2,000 words / series of 3-5 poems)
  • Short films/Videos of performances
  • Visual art/Photography
  • If you want to submit something made with 100-year-old sourdough that has grown arms and legs, email us, but it’s not a definite no.

We ask that all works are submitted with a makers statement (50-250 words) and how it responds to the theme — we invite you to treat it as a valuable opportunity to speak plainly and honestly to your reader and audiences.

7 pieces will be chosen by a panel of judges for our first issue of DIS-ORIENT, and selected contributors will receive a payment of £50.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MAY 20, 2024

TO SUBMIT: Email us your submission, maker’s statement and short bio to saksibisou@gmail.com with ‘DIS-ORIENT’ in the subject line. All image or video files should be hosted online (ie. on Google Drive/Dropbox for images, and on YouTube or Vimeo for videos), we will not accept attachments for non-text-based submissions.

Any questions, email us at saksibisou@gmail.com
